There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den wagering is banned. Eight casinos are anchored in a relatively small location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime area, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a few limitations constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; although, financing sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are allegedly needed to pass, there are methods around this, as is correct of most borders.

The original Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked barge gambling den, contains 150 slot machine games and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machines and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the common table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel complex that highlights a number of conveniences on top of the casino, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 tables.
